La Galería Alcuadrado, dentro de su constante flujo y mutación, exhibió tres videos del artista colombiano Óscar Muñoz en el espacio NA(B) Room de Madrid. La exposición contó con la participación de Sotheby`s New Collectors. Se presentaron los videos Narciso, Re/trato y una instalación de la serie Biografías. Las obras Re/trato y Narciso se proyectaron en gran formato sobre las paredes del NA(B) Room, proponiendo así una nueva manera de aproximarse a la obra de Óscar Muñoz. Narciso. Parte de un autorretrato lineal impreso con polvo de carbón flotando en la superficie del agua contenida en la poceta de un lavamanos. El video registra los movimientos del desagüe por el sifón del lavamanos y la deformación progresiva de la imagen que flota. Las dos imágenes, la impresión y su sombra, separadas inicialmente, tratan de encontrarse durante toda la acción y sólo lo logran en el instante final de su destrucción. Biografías. Es una video-instalación de cinco imágenes, -retratos de personas fallecidas- proyectadas verticalmente sobre el piso. La acción en loop, es un constante constituírse imagen desde que el agua brota del sifón hasta que se llena y, desconfigurarse al vaciarse por el desagüe; en un ciclo vital perpetuo. Re/trato. Es el registro en loop del acto de dibujar un rostro (Autorretrato) con agua sobre una losa caliente al sol. Como lo sugiere doblemente su nombre es un reintento constante e infructuoso; la mano se empecina sin descanso en fijar los trazos que la evaporación desvanece. “Como en el mito de Sísifo, la mano realiza un trabajo difícil a sabiendas de que el fruto de este esfuerzo se perderá irremisiblemente, regresando siempre al punto de partida, en un acto doble de frustración y tenacidad”. Alcuadrado Gallery, in keeping with this idea of constant flux and mutation, traveled to NA (B) Room in Madrid where it exhibited three videos by Colombian artist Óscar Muñoz. The exhibition included the participation of Sotheby’s New Collectors. The videos presented included Narciso (Narcissus), Re/trato (Portrait*) and an installation from the Biografías (Biographies) series. Both Re/trato and Narciso were projected in a large scale format onto the walls of NA (B) Room, thus offering a new way to experience Óscar Muñoz’s work. Narciso (Narcissus).This video shows a linear self-portrait made from carbon dust floating on the surface of water in a sink, documenting the process of drainage and the progressive deformation of the floating image. The two images, the drawing and its shadow, initially separated, attempt to come together during this process, only succeeding in the final moment of their mutual destruction. Biografías (Biographies). This is a video installation made up of five images—portraits of deceased individuals—projected vertically onto the floor. The looped action is a constant construction of the image from the moment at which the water seeps up from the drain filling the sink, only to then deform it by draining again in a dynamic, perpetual cycle. Re/trato (Portrait*). This is a (looped) documentation of the act of drawing a face (self-portrait) with water onto a stone slab heated in the sun. As the wordplay of its (Spanish) title suggests, it is a constant and fruitless re-attempt; the hand untiringly persists in fixing strokes faded by evaporation. “As in the myth of Sisyphus, the hand carries out an impossible task knowing full well that the fruit of this effort will be irremissibly lost, always returning to the point of departure, in a double act of frustration and perseverance.” José Roca. * translator’s note: Retrato (Portrait) written “Re/trato” is a word play in Spanish meaning both: “portrait” and something like “re-treatment.” |
